Three Boys Laughing began during a season of early motherhood – a time filled with sleepless nights, precious skin and never-ending piles of washing! There was also a growing awareness that many of the products I was using on my babies weren’t as safe as I wanted them to be. My boys had eczema, and I found myself standing in the aisle reading labels, trying to decipher ingredients I couldn’t pronounce. Even products marketed as “natural” or “for babies” still didn’t feel like something I could fully trust. I tried them all though – some recommended by friends, others by doctors – but nothing soothed their skin.
So I started small. I made my first batch of soap in my kitchen, using ingredients I already had on hand. Nothing fancy – just a desire to care for my children in a way that felt simple, honest and nourishing. The more I learned, the more I fell in love with the process: turning something humble into something beautiful – and more importantly – knowing exactly what was in it.
As a mother, I didn’t want to choose between safety and enjoyment – I wanted both. Skincare that was gentle enough for them, and still felt like a small ritual of care for me.
That’s where Three Boys Laughing began – not as a business, but as an act of love. And yes, the business is named after my boys. The sound of them laughing is my favourite sound in the world and something I will never tire of hearing.
My biggest turning point came when I realised that soap was just the beginning! I started reading about tallow and its benefits as skin care. I realised that I could trace every step of my tallow from the land we live on to the jars I fill. We raise our own cattle here on our property in Western Queensland. I render the tallow by hand, and every product is made in small batches using ingredients you’d recognise from your own kitchen or garden – clays, herbs, cold-pressed oils, essential oils. That full-circle transparency has become the heart of my work.
It’s not just about creating a product – it has become a way of life. A commitment to slow making, low waste and the kind of care that begins long before anything touches your skin.
